3 Questions Before Jumping Into Stray Dog

3 Questions Before Jumping Into Stray Dog

I have been working on a business model on the back burner for months now. Portmanteau is sizzling hot right now and definitely on the front burner, requiring a lot of my time and energy and focus. I do, however, really want to develop Stray Dog. So, here’s a little exercise to see where that idea is going, especially after the depressing month o’ Feburary where I pretty much doubted it whole…

I Can Do That.

I Can Do That.

Producers wear many hats: They’re creatives. They’re journalists and creative writers. They’re liaisons to a dedicated list of clients. They have good senses of humor. They’re technologically adept, self-motivated and generally excited about life.

I’ve been looking for jobs, but I’ve also been looking at jobs, job titles, job descriptions, and job requirements. I have a lot of experience, but does…

Producing as Creative Role

Producing as Creative Role

There’s a tendency in theatre to see directors as the creative ones and producing as a more practical role, but I’ve found the producing to be creative as well as practical. I’ve enjoyed working with a team of designers to devise ways to decorate the venue and make the festival feel cohesive, as well as navigating the audience around the space.

You Do Know Art

You Do Know Art

you know art

I HATE “I might not know art, but I know what I like.”  …You do know art. You might not know all the words around it but you are sentient and it is happening around you all the time. What you are saying is I can’t be bothered thinking about it.

It’s reductive and so I hate it. The reductive is the worst. It is the lowest of the low. The reductive stinks to high heaven. In everything. Art, music,…

Building Theatre For Audiences

Building Theatre For Audiences

If-You-Build-It-they-will-come-quote

The truth is that no one needs to be trained to enjoy theater. Theater is primal. When a show is electric – when a play surprises and delights and actually says something new and truthful about the world that we live in – there’s a collective energy in the room that needs no explanation. It’s just that a lot of theater is terribly boring, and we’re not doing all we can to respect audiences enough…

Hard Truth or Bitterness? Coping With More Bad Advice for Creatives.

Hard Truth or Bitterness? Coping With More Bad Advice for Creatives.

There’s a blog/listicle going around stating Ten Things Theaters Need to Do Right Now to Save Themselves. I have a very specific way to read Listicles- just read the bold highlights. These ten highlights reminded me about what was so difficult to accept as a young aspiring Broadway actress: it’s a hard, hard world and get out if you can. Yes, Wagner. These are the lessons I learned in your…
